Executive Chairman & Founder, Abaco
Abaco's Executive Chairman and Founder, Fernando Alvarez, established Abaco in 1989 in Puerto Rico. By the end of 1994, he had established Abaco as the leading provider of mobile enterprise system consulting and software design on the island with multiple clients and multimillion dollars in revenue.
In 1997, Mr. Alvarez, recognizing the market potential for Abaco's products, decided to take Abaco to the mainland and opened an office in Atlanta. In 1998, Ernst &Young recognized Mr. Alvarez as the Puerto Rico Entrepreneur of the Year. Abaco expanded its presence internationally in 1999 by opening offices in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
In 2000, Mr. Alvarez completed a venture round of financing for Abaco from Benchmark Capital, Noro-Moseley Partners and SAP Ventures. Mr. Alvarez was also honored that year as one of the 100 most influential Hispanic business leaders by Hispanic Business magazine. Respected throughout the industry as a leader in the mobile enterprise space, Mr. Alvarez is a frequent speaker at industry events around the world. Mr. Alvarez graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. and holds a law degree from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.
Alan J. Taetle

Alan J. Taetle, is a General Partner at Noro-Moseley Partners. Alan evaluates investment opportunities in the information technology area. He actively works with a number of Noro-Moseley portfolio companies.
He currently serves on the board of Novient, Inc., egulliver.com, Secureworks, Abaco Inc. and Adjoined Technologies. Alan also chairs the Internet Advisory Board of Choicepoint, Inc., a NYSE company focused on providing information that helps companies make educated, intelligent choices to reduce risk and fraud. Alan is a regular columnist on venture capital investing in DigitalSouth magazine and a member of the corporate advisory board for the University of Michigan.
Prior to Noro-Moseley, Alan was MindSpring Enterprise's Executive Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. He joined the Company as its Vice President of Business Development in March of 1995 and then became the Vice President of Marketing in September of 1996. Mr. Taetle received a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
Steve Spurlock
General Partner, Benchmark Capital
Steve Spurlock serves as Benchmark’s general partner running the day-to-day operations of the firm. He joined Benchmark in July 1999 after spending four years as a partner with Gunderson Dettmer.
Prior to co-founding Gunderson Dettmer in 1995, he was an attorney with Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. Steve's practice focused on the representation of private and public emerging growth companies, which encompassed a variety of private financing transactions, public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Steve also represented a number of venture capital firms in connection with their formation and fundraising.
Steve is co-author of Formation and Financing of Emerging Growth Companies , published by Glasser LegalWorks.
