Sample Applications Shop Floor, Warehousing Background: One of Canada's top producers of crude oil, natural gas and recovered sulphur products, required a system to collect data from multiple warehouses located throughout Alberta to maintain an optimal level of inventory. The application is a high-volume, low value maintenance and repair order (MRO). The problem: Not the typical technology users, the users of this system had little or no technical background. And, the deadline for implementation was five weeks. The solution needed to be simple, fast and inexpensive. How it Works: The Varadero solution enables the oil producer to reorder inventory on a real-time basis as each unit is used, simply by scanning it. Warehouse workers, using a wireless handheld device, keep the inventory at an optimal level by simply scanning the order number, the material number and entering the quantity. Goods issued, goods receipts and transfer postings are all tracked automatically. User Benefits: With warehouses located across a wide geographical area, the thin-client architecture's ability to deploy and maintain applications from the central server proved to be a major benefit, as did the speed of implementation. Also essential was the ability of the application to connect with the SAP system to retrieve product information and quantities directly, allowing the reordering of necessary goods on a real-time basis. As part of the Pocket PC worldwide launch, Microsoft showcased this demo. Point of Service, Retail Background: A retailer of computer and electronic equipment wanted a mobile solution for point of sale and retail applications. The application developed using Varadero enables that solution. How it Works: Within the retail store, a customer looking to purchase computer equipment can enter the product number or scan the item in which they are interested. The application will provide an item description, to which the customer can add accessories, extend the product warranty, get additional information, or enter the quantity they wish to purchase. The application will enable the customer to store purchases in their "virtual basket" until they're finished, at which time they can select checkout and simply swipe a credit card to tender payment. They then proceed to a pick-up counter where their order is waiting. User Benefits: With this application, product numbers and product information can be retrieved directly from the SAP System; credit card information can be validated through SAP; a record of each sale can be posted to SAP; and inventory can be adjusted accordingly.
